It’s just a matter of setting up in a spot, keeping wrapped up warm and waiting.
As the sun drops below the horizon, the starlings start to arrive in small groups, and they congregate in front of the two piers. They sometimes fly between the two structures, the smaller groups of birds merging with those that are already there until the flock grows in size enough to be considered a murmuration.
You then have to hope that they get enough altitude to be seen clearly. They often skim along just above the surface of the water before diving under the pier to settle down for the night.
