the Manhattan skyline viewed from Brooklyn

We arrived in New York, tired but excited. New York had just been experiencing a late summer heat wave and just as we arrived, the weather turned and the blue skies were replaced by flat grey clouds and lots of humidity. The weather wasn’t perfect for photography but that wasn’t going to stop us, we had some sights to see!

Our hotel was right in the thick of the hustle and bustle of Times Square and the image you can see was taken from our hotel window on the 29th floor. We soon discovered that Times Square is always as bright as daylight and never quiet. Even in the pouring rain, there are still crowds of people to be found milling around, not to mention police, taxis and all manner of other traffic. It’s nuts!

On arrival, we dumped our bags and headed straight to The Rockerfeller Centre where we had a date with sunset on the rooftop, which of course was hidden behind rain clouds, but at least it was clear and as the light faded, the city lit up below us, offering some fantastic views. Unfortunately, no tripods were allowed up there but I got away with a monopod and there are quite a few stone walls to lean on if longer exposures are required – which they certainly were after the sun set.

Over the next few days, we set off exploring the city. New York is very simple to navigate around and as such we got a fair bit of ground covered.

As much as we enjoyed New York, we also wanted to explore further afield. So we got up early and climbed on a coach…
