I’ve just returned from my first visit to Iceland and it lived up to my expectations big style. We had booked early September partly as it was the beginning of aurora season but as we neared the end of our time there, the forecasts predicted only cloudy skies. Then, the aurora predictions suddenly started to increase and we decided to head out in search of clearer skies. Our first location suffered from not only heavy cloud but lots of light pollution too, so we headed south and east which seemed clearer.

We started to see stars overhead so pulled over and there it was, a white (to the eye) stripe across the sky (green when viewed on an iPhone screen). As we watched, it grew in intensity and colour stretching from horizon to horizon directly above our heads, like a green curtain. That was my first Northern Lights experience – big tick!

The following evening we were in Reykjavik and the skies were much clearer and once again the Aurora Borialis put on a fantastic show. Down at the waterfront it seemed like half of the city had decided to come out and see the spectacle.
